Hi Def Set top boxes come in two varieties.
Stand alone box
This will allow viewing on virtually any TV of the new hi def channels like ONE, Channel Ten's new sports channel, but you will not see hi def resolution quality on a CRT TV such as an old Loewe. In fact some newer hi def boxes will output at LOWER quality to these TVs than a standard def box due to settings limitations.
Personal Video Recorders, which fall into two categories:
Freeview PVR recorders allow recording of hi def and standard def channels to its hard drive, usually 300 to 500gb, but have many limitations, such as no quick skipping of commercials, and you are unable to copy recordings from the hard drive to an external computer.
Normal PVRs allow the best recording and playback flexibility.
Twin tuners allow different programs to be recorded and watched simultaneously. SD card and USB slots add to flexibility with wireless Ethernet available on some models.
Most modern flat panel TVs have an in-built HD tuner, however, this usually means that you can't record from your TV.
Adding a HiDef PVR to the LCD or Plasma TV improves flexibility, ease of use and the ability to record in hi def.

The LED Myth
So called LED TVs use LEDs to produce the backlight but in fact use LCD technology for the actual panel. They can be thinner, and the LED back light in some cases uses less power than earlier models.
